Stroke occurs when a blood vessel feeding the brain bursts or is clogged, causing a sudden disruption in the blood flow to the brain. Carotid artery disease is one of the leading causes of strokes. This screens the carotid arteries in the neck for plaque buildup by visualizing the buildup of fatty plaque in them. A vascular technologist applies an acoustic gel on the neck over carotid arteries. A painless instrument, referred to as a transducer, is moved around neck to visualize the inside of the carotid artery. With this screen we can estimate the degree of blockage, if any, in your carotid arteries.
